In Southern Living's June 2000 issue, Chattanooga's new Coolidge Park was highlighted. For some time Chattanooga's most popular attractions were on the south shore of the Tennessee River. Opening in mid 1999, Coolidge Park brought a "happening place" to the north shore. Named in honor of native son Charles Coolidge, a World War II Medal of Honor recipient, it includes a restored historic carousel featuring 52 wooden animals carved and painted by students of Horsin' Around, a carousel animal carving school located in Chattanooga. There is a lot going on outside also. You can get wet in a large, interactive water play fountain. Water spurts from submerged jets and from the mouths and snouts of eight stone animals. Beyond the fountain is a great open lawn, the site of many planned festivals, craft shows and musical events. There is even a climbing wall under the 110-year old Walnut Street Bridge. And, of course, all paths lead to the river and a dramatic view of Chattanooga's revitalized downtown. The new public park is adjacent to Frazier Avenue, a quaint shopping district housing unique shops and restaurants. Getting here is easy. The park is nestled below and between the Market Street Bridge (for vehicles) and the Walnut Street Bridge (for pedestrians).
