Ross's Landing is the natural setting where Chattanoogans gather informally or for festivals and celebrations. Every June since 1982, the annual nine-day Riverbend Festival attracts more than 500,000 people to the banks of the Tennessee River. Top name talent, such as the Pointer Sisters, Bill Cosby, Brooks and Dunn, Richard Marx, Reba McIntyre, Judy Collins, B.B. King, Travis Tritt, Gloria Estefan, Ray Charles, Lee Ann Rhimes, Mel Torme, Smokey Robinson, Kenny Logins, Alabama, Chicago, and others too numerous to mention, perform on the floating Coca-Cola Stage moored in the Tennessee River. Local and regional artists perform on five stages along the riverfront, and some of the best street performers from around the world draw residents and visitors to a celebration that has gained a reputation as one of the top festivals in the country. On Monday night, blues artists perform at stages along Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard at the free "Bessie Smith Strut." The festival is capped off each year with the grand finale of a musically synchronized fireworks display. For more information, contact Friends of the Festival at 423/756-9796. |
