Between 1982 and 1985, an inclusive community planning process helped define the highest and best use for the 22-mile river corridor in Chattanooga. The city and county-appointed Moccasin Bend Task Force hired Carr, Lynch Associates of Cambridge, Maryland to help local citizens develop the Tennessee Riverpark Master Plan. Its goal: to increase Chattanooga’s livability and its competitive position for attracting new investment.

One of the most engaging and popular projects to emerge was the Riverpark – a continuous circuit of parks, trails and landmarks that will ultimately stretch from the Chickamauga Dam through downtown Chattanooga to Moccasin Bend. An ongoing project, 8 miles of Riverwalk now connect several new riverside parks and attractions including the Fishing Park, Ross’s Landing Plaza, Bluff View Arts District, Battery Place neighborhood, Lookout Rowing Center and Coolidge Park. The 5.5-mile Millennium phase will open in fall 2003, completing the trail along the southern shoreline from Chickamauga Dam to Ross’s Landing.

Since construction began in 1988, nearly $48 million of public and private resources has been expended or committed to design and build 13 miles of Riverwalk and numerous riverside parks and exhibits.
