The Downtown Streetscape Program is a multi-year project designed to enhance the pedestrian experience in Chattanooga’s downtown. Conceived in 1990, the program establishes clearly marked pedestrian areas and links public transit, the City’s extensive riverwalk and greenway system and gateway approaches to the City’s core.
This program was initiated with a $1.4 million contract funded by the City of Chattanooga in 1996. The City continues to fund the program through annual allocations in its capital budget. The Streetscape plan is implemented and maintained by the City’s Public Works Department with oversight by the Riverfront/Downtown Planning and Design Center.
