The “Masonry Works in Public” Project produces brick sculptures designed by local artists and erected by local brick masons on the sidewalks of downtown Chattanooga. This public art project was begun in 1992 and is a collaboration between the Masonry Association of Chattanooga, Association of Visual Arts, and the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects. This unique public art program continues to be handled as a competition funded by the Masonry Association and Association of Visual Arts. Cash awards are given for the selected entries. Brick masons build the sculptures free of charge. The Public Art projects have graced Chattanooga’s public spaces with a feeling of energy, excitement and often whimsy. This ambiance reinforces the conviction that downtown Chattanooga is a special place for everyone.
