An innovative solution to some of the challenges of downtown redevelopment, this system is now active on 13th and 17th Streets to provide sub-grade collection and storage for storm water runoff from public and private developments. It alleviates surcharge to the combined storm and sanitary system in these areas.
The storm water is then captured and stored beneath the sidewalks to be either transferred to one of the city’s combined sewer overflow facilities and pumped to the sewage treatment plant or treated and reused to irrigate the city landscape. A 75-foot tall stainless steel tank with a storage capacity of 105,000 gallons is located at the corner of Market and 17th Streets. The base of this tank includes a public plaza integrated with the playground of the new adjacent elementary school.
