Opened in May 1992, the world’s largest freshwater aquarium is dedicated to the understanding, conservation and enjoyment of rivers. The 12-story high, 130,000 sf institution holds 400,000 gallons of water and more than 7,000 animals representing 350 species of fish, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians from North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

The $3 million renovation of the lower floor into a larger, more flexible changing exhibit gallery significantly enhances the visitor experience at the Tennessee Aquarium. (Change first sentence as shown) The Tennessee Aquarium has far surpassed even the most optimistic projections as an attraction, a catalyst for development and a source of community pride. The Aquarium has served as a beacon for Chattanooga’s downtown and riverfront renaissance and has already been the catalyst for more than $500 million in new development in the immediate area. Over ten million visitors visited in the first nine years of operation.
