The scope of urban design and development activity by the Design Center ranges from overseeing the design and implementation of major projects to coordinating and providing advice for smaller ones.

Examples of major downtown projects receiving advice and assistance include the Miller Plaza Complex, Ross's Landing Plaza, Visitors Center, Northshore Plan, Kirkman High School redevelopment plans, Downtown Housing Overlay Zone, 3D IMAX Theater, two new downtown elementary schools, City/County Development Resources Center and numerous other public and private economic development projects in the Southside, Ross's Landing and Central Business Districts.

Riverfront projects receiving center advice and assistance include the Tennessee Riverpark trail system through key areas such as the Bluff View Arts District and the Battery Place neighborhood and key public space additions such as the Fishing Park, Rowing Center and Coolidge Park and the new 21st Century Waterfront Plan.

The center is extensively involved in public sector projects such as the city's Streetscape Project, initiated by the center, and also major roadway improvements such as the Market Street Redesign, 4th Street Boulevard and Riverfront Parkway Redesign.
